Instruments were important to hula. Hulas were classified by the instrument that would be accompanying the dance. A hula pahu would be a hula accompanied by the pahu drum. A hula pa ipu would be a hula accompanied by an instrument made from a gourd. The classification of hula told the audience what kind of instruments to expect in the hula (Kaeppler 1972, 38-40).
